Question: Where you had the best experience as a geoscientist in your entire career?

    Hi!
    I think the most exciting experience so far in my career has been the oceanographic cruise. Being on a ship in the middle of the ocean without seeing any trace of land for days makes you feel incredibly small and insignificant! We were generally working hard but I really enjoyed it and learnt so much. Having the chance of doing “in real life” what you have been mostly reading and studying about is just great and gives you a much better understanding of what you have learnt.
    I think that also made me feel like a real scientist for the first time!

    For me, my best experience was working on the eruption in Iceland in 2010! I flew to Iceland on the last plane from Europe and spent a week on the mountain while it was erupting collecting ash samples and making maps of where the ash was falling. It was amazing! 🙂

    Hi tulleh,

    In general I love to go to the field, and it is very difficult to me to choose the best experiences. I have seen the stromboli in eruption (not difficult it goes in eruption every 20 minutes) and the Teide expulsing a lot of gases. Also the Etna. I think I got fascinated those times, since I am not so used to see the Earth in action because I study things that happened long in the past.

    So far, one of the best experiences was my first trip to the Gobi Desert! I had never been to a desert before and this was really amazing. We drove from an area close to the Tibet Plateau with lots of small cities and villages, high mountains and green fields, to the hot and dry desert. It is really impressive how great an “empty” desert can be. We did a lot of great work and I met a lot of new people there.
