aftershocks are small to medium earthquake, that are associated with bigger earthquake, when the earth has to, let’s say readjust and settle to fit into the new stress field. Also, aftershocks mostly happen in the rupture area of the main shock and in a particular pattern. Their number decreases in time following some physical laws.
