Question: What is the ash cloud made out of ?

  1. A volcanic ash cloud is made up of really small bits of volcanic rock that have been blown apart. The pieces are broken up during the eruption and are often much smaller than half a mili meter in size. Because the ash is so small, it cools really quickly in the sky and it ends up looking like glass. You can also get pumice in an ash cloud which is the same material but bigger and its full of holes and really light to feel. You will also see broken pieces of rock in the ash cloud which are parts of the original volcano which got blown up when the eruption started!
