Question: Hello. Do you think that games can improve memory, attention and focus?

  1. hi midnightenvy,

I do think games improve memory attention and focus, in the end those, and reaction, are the ones you are practicing all the time when playing them. So in that sense i think computer games can be quite useful. However, i also believe that if you play too many games, you start to waste other valuable skills, like communication, fitness, and enjoying nature for example!

  2. Hi midnightenvy,

I will add to Bas that it depends. Be sure that you are playing in your “hobby” time. Do not play during lessons and do not substitute any other activities by computer games. Remember that sport also makes your mind more efficient and improves your health.

  3. Hi!
I agree with the others and this is a good question, because there are actually a lot of contrasting theories about this.
First of all, it also depends on what kind of games we’re talking about. There are differences between computer games and anything else which involves a virtual reality and real and more practical games or exercises.
The contrasting theories are on the use of video games and on how they could actually reduce our capacity of staying concentrated for a long period of time or on how some of them could make our communication skills worse.
These kind of theories also apply to watching tv while doing other activities and have always been debated. We still don’t have definitive answers about them, so probably the best practice is to do everything with moderation.
So we should definitely remember about all those games that can be played in real life and outside (and when we grow up these simply turn into practicing sports).

  4. I have just been reading an academic paper about using games in education! 🙂

it definitely depends on what sort of games you are playing and what sort of skills you are using! for me, if i have something to teach students which is very hard, then I can use a game that they know and understand and change it to focus onto our work. but as they are still playing a game, the students will learn things without realizing that they are learning! 🙂
