Question: do u like maths?

  1. Hi suagaj1!

Let me put it that way: In school, I didn’t really like maths, and in the first year of university it was even worse. 😉
Now I really know that math is needed here and there to describe and to solve problems. I don’t use complicated maths every day myself, but behind my computer programs for example there are lots and lots of equations. And it is really helpful (and important) to know what they are all about to understand your research. So now I like maths definetively more than back in school.

    All the best,
    Andi

  2. Hi!
To be honest, maths was never my favourite subject in school and actually it was also not my strongest skill.
So it’s quite funny that now I’m doing a PhD where I’m using mathematical models and equations all the time, isn’t it?! My high school maths professor would probably never believe this!
Anyway I think maths is absolutely necessary is science, so it’s good to use it and understand it. In my opinion, the fun part is solving problems and playing with the numbers, so let’s say that I don’t dislike it 🙂

  3. I do!!

I love maths. Not all geoscientists are math haters. And maths are very usuful. Do not believe Calvin and Hobbes comic strip (http://geophysicstreasurehunt.blogspot.nl/2012/11/geologist-jokes.html) geologist is a profession and maths are a very interesting skill to have in Earth Sciences.

  4. I always found maths very hard at school, but it is important to understand maths as you will use it a lot if you want to work as a scientist. I worked very hard at maths and now it doesn’t scare me as much as it used to!
